Today at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, better known as C2E2, leading digital comic book distributor comiXology announced the upcoming release of its highly-anticipated Comics4Kids app for the iPhone, iPad and other mobile devices. Specifically designed for children ages 9 and older, Comics4Kids features titles from a host of acclaimed publishers, including Archie Comics and Nicktoons Comics in addition to a number of other classic children's titles. Adult comic fans also catch up on their favorite selections from Archie Comics immediately through the Comics by comiXology app, also available for free download through the iTunes App Store.

comiXology's Comics4Kids was created specifically to introduce a new generation of tech-savvy kids to comics. The app offers a creative outlet for kids to develop critical reading skills while challenging their imagination. In a recent University of Illinois study Carol L. Tilley, expert in children’s literature and a professor of Library and Information Science confirms: “If reading is to lead to any meaningful knowledge or comprehension, readers must approach a text with an understanding of the relevant social, linguistic and cultural conventions. If you really consider how the pictures and words work together in consonance to tell a story, you can make the case that comics are just as complex as any other kind of literature.”

Established to provide parents with a trusted, kid-friendly solution to digital comics, Comics4Kids will offer a distinctive set of classic and modern titles including Archie, Sonic the Hedgehog and, for a limited time, Nickelodeon's Spongebob Squarepants. The app will launch with nearly 50 comics from more than five publishers, allowing kids to explore a new realm of possibilities in reading. Comics4Kids also integrates a simple, easy-to-navigate user interface and comiXology's Retail Locater, adding significant ease to discovering kid-friendly comics.

“Comics were a staple of my life growing up. I lived and breathed Archie as a kid, so I know how big of a role these books can play in children’s development. Now, as an adult, I’m doing everything I can to ensure that today’s generation of tech-oriented kids has the same opportunity through comiXology,” said Jon Goldwater, CEO of Archie Comics.

Comics4Kids, marking a new strategic initiative for comiXology, is aimed at creating engaging resources to strengthen child development. According to comiXology CEO David Steinberger, “Comics have always been read by kids. What we noticed though was the lack of appropriate digital comics made specifically for kids. Since most of the comic apps out there now are 17 and over because of the content they provide, we knew we needed to make an entirely new app for the kids who want to discover and explore comics; an app that parents could feel good about.”

comiXology's Comics4Kids app will be available for free download in Apple’s iTunes App Store at the end of April 2010.
