Variety has reported that Gwyneth Paltrow has officially signed on to star in the upcoming Iron Man film as Virginia “Pepper” Potts. The movie, directed by Jon Favreau, will hit theatres in May 2008 through Paramount Pictures.

Paltrow joins a cast that already includes Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man) and Terrence Howard (Jim Rhodes/War Machine). Her role is that of Pepper Potts, who was first introduced in 1963’s Tales of Suspense #45 as the secretary of Tony Stark. Later, she started a relationship with longtime Stark assistant Happy Hogan and went on to marry him. Pepper was last seen in December’s Iron Man #14, the current volume’s latest issue, in which she asked Tony to pull the plug on her husband’s life support. Happy ended up in a serious coma following his fight with Spymaster in Iron Man #13.
