Where Grows the Bitter Herb by Ben Powis, iPhone Comic

UK Illustrator and small press comics auteur, Ben Powis, brings his latest two works to the iTunes storefront, comics that are gorgeously displayed on the iPhone and iPod Touch!  Published by Robot Comics and bundled with the new iRobot Comics Viewer, “Turtle Guitar” is offered as a free downloadable short comic story while “Where Grows the Bitter Herb” is the first Graphic Novel sized mobile comic released by Robot ComicsBen Powis is well-known for crafting comics that push the boundaries of what small press books can achieve, and perhaps one critic put it best when he called Powis’ comics: “Strange yet beautiful.”

“[Turtle Guitar is] a gorgeous tale of a farmer tending his dying, barren land who discovers a turtle whose song is so beautiful it can bring life to dead earth. A simple and slight tale but the artwork is just spectacularly good (rather reminiscent of Maurice Sendak I thought).”  –Forbidden Planet International

Incredibly complex and detailed art; lush colours and intricate, complicated backgrounds populated with simply drawn creatures of varying degrees of strangeness.  [Where Grows the Bitter Herb] looks a damn sight better than most comics from the big boys.  But once you get beyond how nice the book looks superficially, open it up and be amazed at how good it is as a comic.FICTIONS

Synopsis

Turtle guitar by Ben Powis, iPhone Comic

TURTLE GUITAR and WHERE GROWS THE BITTER HERB are both fable-like stories, following an unnamed protagonist on a heroic quest to save everything they know.  TURTLE focuses on a farmer seeking to save a dying land, and discovering a Turtle whose song can bring life to dead earth!  BITTER HERB then brings Ben’s same sense of magical storytelling to an epic level, where a single hero struggles valiantly to find a rare herb located at the farthest, most remote reaches of the world.  Turtle Guitar and Where Grows the Bitter Herb are both written and illustrated by Ben Powis, published for mobiles by Robot Comics.
