By Tyler Kirkham

Image is blowing out 20 candles. Wow, 20 years! Being in business for so long in itself is a milestone in comic books, not to mention the multiple Image titles that have hit the 100-issue mark. Combine that with spin-offs in multiple other media, and it’s easy to see why Image is on the map as one of the best creative outlets in not just comics but entertainment overall.

The forming of Image Comics is the biggest and # 1 reason I wanted to be a comic book creator. Never before has there been a time that this many high profile creators have gotten together. Nor will there ever will be.  The comics were so ground-breaking compared to what was available at that point. The characters, art, colors and printing quality was outstanding. It really made the books jump off the shelf.

I grew up reading Wolverine comics, but with Image I felt the characters could really compete with how bad ass Logan was. I remember going on road trips with my family or camping. I always brought my favorite Image comics. Or if we went out of state I had my parents find a local comic shop so I could try to find alternate foil covers!

The Image creators still are some of the biggest influences for me. It was my goal to work at an Image comics studio. I got that opportunity with Top Cow. These guys were the rock stars of comics when I grew up, and working with them felt like a dream come true. I had a blast, and drawing stuff like Strykeforce and V.I.C.E. was unbelievable, especially the Darkness/Wolverine one-shot in 2006 since it paired two of my favorite characters. The work I did for Top Cow helped me grow as an artist too, no doubt.

At some point I still want to have a creator-owned book come out under the Image banner… only then will I feel like I have met my childhood goals!
